Cooperation of MIA RT with UN conventional organs

Dushanbe, May 14. (NIAT “Khovar”).-
On May 10, Tajik Minister of Interior Affairs Ramazon Rahimov met with United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture Juan Mendez, who is on visit to Tajikistan.

During the meeting the parties discussed the issues of cooperation strengthening with UN conventional organs in sphere of human rights, improvement of national legislation and practice in sphere of prevention and torture’s prevention, according to the official website of Tajikistan Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Tajik Minister in particular noted the existing difficulties and shortcomings, which will be eliminated in accordance with established international norms.

Juan Mendez in Tajikistan arrived with official visit at the request of Tajikistan Government and his visit will last till May 18. In his visit’s framework Juan Mendes will meet with Tajik legislatives, lawyers, staffs of the law enforcement organs and non-governmental organizations.

To date, at the system of MIA RT from the detention of persons, there are only temporary detention of detainees and prisoners. Presently, its number is 66.

It should be mentioned that Tajikistan joined Convention against tortures and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and punishment on July 21, 1994, which came into effect in RT from February 10, 1995. (Translated by M.Ismatova)
